Day 1 Sun Aug 7: NEW YORK - LISBON. We Depart New York for
our overnight flight to Lisbon, Portugal. We will be served dinner and breakfast
aloft.
Day 2 Mon Aug 8: LISBON - FATIMA. We arrive at the Lisbon
Airport where we are met and given an orientation tour of Lisbon including Pombal square, Liberty Avenue, Rossio Square, Belem Tower and the Monument to
the Discoveries on the bank of the Tagus as well as a stop at Lisbon's
Romanesque Cathedral, the Sé. Enroute to Fatima, we visit Santarem, the
Church of Marvila and the site of the Eucharistic Miracle.
Eucharistic Celebration. We continue to Fatima and our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 3 Tue Aug 9: FATIMA.
Today, our morning is devoted to
visiting the Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima,
as well as the birthplaces of Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia to whom the
Virgin appeared for the first time on May 13th, 1917. Dinner
and overnight at our hotel. In the evening, we join
the Rosary and candlelight procession.
Day 4 Wed Aug 10: FATIMA - BURGOS.
This morning, we depart Fatima and drive through
the beautiful countryside to Burgos. Founded in
the 9th century, Burgos was an important hub for the Kingdom of Castile.
Dinner
and overnight at our hotel.
Day 5 Thu Aug 11: BURGOS - LOURDES. This
morning, we visit the magnificent Cathedral
- a classic example of Gothic architecture. The
medieval churches, historic plaza and monument to El Cid will all be appreciated
before bidding farewell to this charming city. This
afternoon, we continue to Lourdes. Following
dinner tonight, we have the option of participating in the Torch lighting
Procession.
Day 6 Fri Aug 12: LOURDES. This morning,
we begin with a visit to the Grotto. Our walking
tour takes us to Boly Mill (the
birthplace of St. Bernadette), the Cachot
(the former jail where she lived during the
apparitions) and the local parish church.
Our afternoon is free for personal devotions to
Our Lady of Lourdes. And, for those who wish,
the legendary & healing waters of the miraculous
Lourdes spring. Dinner and overnight at our hotel.
Day 7 Sat Aug 13: LOURDES - MADRID.
This morning, we depart for Madrid and travel south through the Spanish country.
We arrive in Madrid and have a panoramic tour of the
city before we check in to our hostel. Dinner is
included.
Day 8 Sun Aug 14: MADRID. (Missions) We
serve as WYD volunteers.
Day 9 Mon Aug 15: MADRID. This morning,
we check out of our hostel and move to our WYD accommodations with meals as per
the WYD package. The remainder of the day will be for missions.
Day 10 Tue Aug 16:
WYD. In the morning, we have missions. About 5:30 pm, we celebrate Mass in
Madrid's Cibeles Square, presided over by the archbishop of Madrid and
concelebrated by the bishops and priests participating in WYD. About 9:00 pm,
we have the first activities of the Youth Festival—WYD Cultural Program begins,
which include concerts, exhibitions, displays, guided visits to Museums, plays,
etc. (details to be determined.)
Day 11 Wed Aug 17:
WYD. Today, we have catechesis session, organized by linguistic groups,
with bishops from all over the world. These sessions take place in churches,
schools, auditoriums and sports centers of Madrid. This evening, we participate
in the Youth Festival—WYD Cultural Program.
Day 12 Thu Aug 18:
WYD. Catechesis session during the day. About 5:00 pm, we receive and
welcome the Holy Father in Cibeles Square. WYD Cultural Program in the evening
around 9:00 pm.
Day 13 Fri Aug 19:
WYD. Catechesis session during the day. Youth Festival—WYD Cultural
Program at 5:00 pm. At about 9:00 pm, we participate in WYD Via Crucis.
Fourteen "pasos" of the Spanish Holy Week, from different points of the
peninsula, go out in procession through the streets of Madrid around Cibeles
Square.
Day 14 Sat Aug 20:
WYD. Preparatory ceremony at Cuatro Vientos
(Four Winds) aerodrome around 4:00 pm: Pilgrims arrive,
little by little, at the aerodrome and take their places. Meanwhile,
different activities take place on the stage (testimonies of young people,
musical interpretations, prayers to the Virgin, etc.), to prepare for the
Vigil. At about 8:00 pm, the Pope arrives and Eucharistic adoration begins.
Planned is an address by the Holy Father. We then spend the night at the aerodrome. For those who so wish, there will be several tents where we
can adore the Most Blessed Sacrament.
Day 15 Sun Aug 21:
WYD. This morning, the Pope concelebrates Mass with thousands of bishops
and priests and he will address young people and those who are not so young, to
send them out to the world to witness to their faith, as the Lord did with his
Apostles. At the end of the conclusive Mass, the Holy Father will announce the
place where the next World Youth Day will be held. The remainder of the day is
at leisure for pursuits on our own.
Day 16 Mon Aug 22: MADRID - NEW YORK. Transfer to the airport
for our flight home - the end of our Pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2011
